Front: the artwork shows Pompenian forces en router to the North Africa. Inspired by a Roman Republican denarius of Sextus Pompey, also identified by the coin's  legend as "son of Neptune" ( 42-38 BC).   

Back: the artwork is inspired by a famous denarius of Augustus dedicated to DIVVS • IVLIVS (Julius Caesar) featuring the 'star' on the reverse, the Sidus Iulium. A comet that appeared during the festivities held by Octavian in honor of Venus Genetrix on 20-23 July 44 BC, and was subsequently connected to Caesar's deification.
